Goannas or Monitors are egg laying, carnivorous lizards with 27 described species in Australia.  They are small to extremely large with long heads and necks, narrow snouts and deeply forked tongues.  Species range greatly in size from the short-tailed pygmy monitor at around 23 cm to the Perentie which can grow over 2 metres. Widespread over the mainland, absent from Tasmania.
